11 Interesting Facts About Parrots

Parrots are exotic birds because their lives in hot countries such as Africa, Amazon, Brazil and they can't survive in colder regions. Parrots are very intelligent animals, able to reproduce sounds they hear in their environment, sometimes, a multitude of sounds, and pronounce words, and even entire phrases. The best imitator of human speech is the African gray parrot.



Parrots are grouped within the family of the Psittacidae family and in this group of birds are also part of parrots, cockatoos, macaws, in addition to the Agapornis or lovebirds, parakeets, Lories, the Amazons and the African parrots.

However, the coloring is a very obvious feature of the animals and especially in these, parrots, has a great importance. The colorful parrots varies greatly according to their type; macaw, cockatoo, Lori, parrot, etc., and even from one species to another. Not all parrots are so colorful and beautiful as they are accustomed.

  • The feeding of parrots predominantly based on seeds and fruits, buds, roots and tubers. A few are inclined honey, fruit and tree secretions. Some even feed on insects, worms, etc.. Depends on the specific species of parrots.
  • Parrots have a powerful curved beak to break the tough husk of their more usual food, seeds and fruits, some of which are as hard as those of the palm trees. With the peak, parrots tend to move from branch to branch. In order to facilitate this task, parrots can open much the peak according to the high mobility of their upper jaw.
  • Although similar to that of the birds of prey, the peak of the parrots is shorter and curved, as the role of this structure is very different from the birds of prey.   • Parrots fingers are arranged in pairs, two forward and two steps back. This feature enables them to grasp objects with a great deal of skill, some of them are small as the seeds with which they consumed. In counterpart, on the ground these birds are very clumsy.
  •  As all birds, parrots, in spite of having short wings, they are good flyers, especially the small size of parrots can fly quickly and follow a very straight trajectory.
  • Gray parrot has a reputation for being the best of all the talkative parrot species, not only can imitate speech, but also mimic a voice that sounds as a human being. Also mimic sounds with an incredible accuracy, since the dripping of a faucet until the construction equipment. Caregivers should be careful to pronounce any word they don't want the birds learn, as they seem to have a special talent to learn only what should not.

  • The personality of parrots always depends on the care they receive. If they are ignored by their owners, these birds can quickly become cold and temperamental. When left unattended, is a striking bird and emotional.   • Although the majority of parrots is diurnal, a few parrots sleep during the day and are fully awake at night, like the night parrot (to Pezoporus occidentalis).  The night parrot is a species endemic to Australia, stays, during the day, well hidden among the vegetation helped by his mimetic plumage, dark brown in color with yellow and green spots. The parrotlet terrestrial (to Pezoporus wallicus) is another parrot species of nocturnal habits which is related to the night parrot, both species live in Australia.
Conclusion: It's not all the parrots that are active throughout the day, but they avoid movement during the hours of maximum heat of midday. It is in these moments when they can be seen resting in the trees. In the morning and the evening is when the parrots are most actively taking advantage of this time to move to the points of food. In these times of the day is the best time you can see these birds flying in the skies of the rain forests.
