6 Unique Facts About Peacocks

Peacock, "The Pretty Birds" in animal's kingdom have brightly colored wings, are known as a beautiful and graceful animals. Hence, a lot of confidence is regarded in peacock as a symbol of beauty, faithfulness, permanence and peace. But, there are some things that no less special than India's national bird. Peacocks are native to the jungles of India and Sri Lanka and they are mostly found in forests and rain forests (tropical forests).


Peacocks are large, colorful pheasants (typically blue and green) known for their iridescent tails. These tail feathers, or coverts, spread out in a distinctive train that is more than 60 percent of the bird’s total body length and boast colorful "eye" markings of blue, gold, red, and other hues. 

The large train is used in mating rituals and courtship displays. It can be arched into a magnificent fan that reaches across the bird's back and touches the ground on either side. Females are believed to choose their mates according to the size, color, and quality of these outrageous feather trains.

The main characteristic of peacock tail feathers are decorated with colors that are very beautiful. However, just a male peacocks tail are great. With head and neck blue, peacock looks more attractive. Moreover, added adorable sparkly green feathers that make them look so beautiful. The female peacock is called Peahen and small peacock is called paonneau while the male name remained peacock.

Because of their beauty, peacocks was subjected to manhunt. As a result, the population continued to decline, and if left unchecked, it can lead to extinction. In addition to its coat, peacocks are also hunted for meat. Peacock meat is believed to be a cure for arthritis.

  • Habitat. Peacocks are found in the forests and along the rivers, as well as the edge of large clearings in the hot and humid regions, in the mountains of southern India, it inhabits tropical rain forests with trees and bushes are sparse, up to an altitude of 2000 meters.
  • Family. Peacocks live in groups and form a family. They live in trees at night. And in the daytime, they prefer to walk around on the ground and perched on a bare tree branch.
  • Mating. The breeding season lasts all spring. During courtship , the male, which is the focus of female. Raises his tail feathers and spreads its feathers upper tail fan. Females flock to the call and, as appropriate, adopt the characteristic postures indicating their willingness to mate, crouched on the floor in front of the male, wings half-open. At this signal, the peacock quickly closes its beautiful trails and mates successively with peahen.

  • Nesting. The female has a dull plumage that allows it to blend with the environment to hatch and raise their young. The female builds a nest in the thick bushes, more rarely in the hollow branches and buildings. She usually lays three to five eggs and incubation lasts for 28 to 30 days. The young remain in the nest for four days. The peahen helps the young ones to find food and sometimes feeds their-self during their early days.
  • Wing. Beautiful wings on the peacock was only owned by the male peacock, not a female. Because the wing is used by the beautiful male peacock to attract the female. Meanwhile, the females do not have the long tail feathers.

Conclusion. Only the male peacocks have long beards metallic green with blue reflections and bronze color, forming near their end, a spot evoking a look and known as the eyes-pot name, the center is surrounded by a bright blue rings concentric brown, golden yellow and purple. The peahen is smaller than the peacock. She does not troll and her plumage is duller. 

However, you can not always see the stunning scenery, the spreading of the wing. You have to wait for peacock mating season. Because, only the male peacock displays his tail like a fan and show his beauty to attract a peahen (Female Peacock).
